The Fabrics We Chose for the Lining. Our Design Philosophy for What Touches the Skin.

In a previous article, we shared why Doudou wau chose
polyester waffle knit for our outer fabric.

This time, we'd like to talk about the lining.

In baby clothing, the lining is the side you don't see.
But it's also the part closest to your baby's skin.

That's exactly why
we've been even more careful choosing this layer than the outer fabric.

Everything that touches the skin is the lining's job

Doudou wau's baby and kids wear is designed
with a two-layer structure that gives each layer a distinct role.

The outer fabric handles aesthetics and durability.
The lining handles softness and comfort against the skin.

Since the lining is what your baby actually touches,
choosing the right material for this layer is a crucial decision.

At Doudou wau, we use two different lining fabrics
depending on the item.

Organic Cotton Ponte (SILK on VALLEY)

The first is a 100% cotton organic cotton ponte.

Organic cotton is made from cotton plants
grown with minimal use of pesticides and chemical fertilizers.
It carries a lower risk of chemical residue,
which offers peace of mind for anything that touches a baby's skin.

"Ponte" refers to a type of knit construction
that provides a substantial thickness
while maintaining a smooth, soft surface.

The organic cotton ponte used by Doudou wau
is connected to the "SILK on VALLEY in YAMAGA" project.

SILK on VALLEY is a project born from
a new silk industry initiative based in Yamaga City, Kumamoto Prefecture.
It uses silk produced by Atsumaru Yamaga Silk Co., Ltd.
in its production process.

The project aims to "create world-class added value through Yamaga silk"
and "build a regional revitalization model."
The organic cotton used in this fabric is grown
on farmland free from pesticides and chemical fertilizers.

By using this material as the lining,
the surface touching your baby's skin is 100% natural fiber.
Its high moisture absorption helps maintain
a gentle, comfortable feel even when your baby sweats.

Cotton Mini Pile

The second is a cotton mini pile,
made from 76% cotton and 24% polyester.

Pile refers to a fabric woven with
looped threads on the surface—similar to what you see on a towel.

"Mini pile" means the loops are shorter,
creating a soft, fluffy texture
that's less likely to snag.

Cotton mini pile has several qualities worth noting.

First, high absorbency.
The loop structure captures moisture effectively,
making it well suited for babies who sweat easily.

Next, softness.
With a medium weight and fluffy texture,
the fabric has a gentle feel against the skin.

And stretch.
The 24% polyester blend provides
moderate elasticity, so it moves with your baby
rather than restricting them.

Additionally, this fabric is treated with a non-formalin finish.
This process minimizes residual formaldehyde,
meeting the safety standards required for baby products.

Why use two different linings?

You might wonder,
"Why not just use organic cotton for everything?"

The reason is that different items
call for different functions.

For items that sit close to the skin,
the all-natural softness of organic cotton ponte is the better fit.

For items used during more active moments,
cotton mini pile—with its combination of stretch and absorbency—
is more suitable.

Rather than using the same material for everything,
we choose based on how the item will be used
and how the baby will move in it.

That's the thinking behind Doudou wau's lining design.

Design philosophy shows most where you can't see it

The lining isn't visible when worn.
It doesn't show up in photos.

But it's the part your baby touches the longest.

Less fussing.
Better sleep.
Staying comfortable even after sweating.

Those small differences
may not be unrelated to the fabric against their skin.

The outer fabric for beauty and practicality.
The lining for gentleness against the skin.

This two-layer structure
is at the heart of how Doudou wau designs its products.
